Designation: Consultant Microbiologist

Reporting To: Lab director /Medical director /Managing director

Qualification & Experience: MD (microbiology) / D Bact

Knowledge and skills required:

 Should have knowledge of NABL 112 and ISO15189 standards.

 Effective teaching skills.

 Should have knowledge of current practices and guidelines in microbiology.

Key result areas:

1) Overall operation and direction of microbiology department.

2) Establishing procedures and policies of quality system procedure, SOPs, work instructions,

charts, calibration

3) Ensure that the quality control and quality assurance programs are established and maintained to

assure the quality of laboratory services provided and to identify failures in quality as they occur.

4) Verification of reports before dispatch and to see that turnaround time is maintained.

5) To interact and coordinate with clinicians.

6) To include newer tests in NABL scope.

7) To interact with Lab staff and Students for effective day to day work.

8) To maintain the staff morale.

9) To present microbiological data for publication.

10) Regular participation in infection control of the hospital and heading the HICC committee.

11) Training the ICN and hospital staff regarding infection control policies.

Job responsibilities:

Participatory

1) Reporting of slides and smears.

2) To authorize the reports.

3) To train the technicians and paramedical students.

4) To periodically review microbiology staff competency.

5) Establish and maintain criteria to meet the standard requirements of ISO 15189.

6) To appoint and assign duties to section head and deputy section heads.

7) To define, document and maintain procedures to control all documents.

8) To review and approve all documents.

9) To provide advice on choice of examination and use of services, repeat frequency and type of

sample

10) To maintain procedure for resolution of complaints

11) To identify the Non conformances, and take required corrective action

12) To monitor the results of corrective action and implement the changes

13) To provide access to suitable educational and training opportunities for all lab staff

14) To organize and carry out the internal audit

15) To prepare the agenda of management review meeting according to NABL guidelines and discuss

with the management

16) Verify & approval all Microbiology , Serology & Molecular Biology Reports

Will supervise:

1) To supervise the inventory control system for supplies

2) To supervise that obsolete documents are marked and removed from access

3) To supervise the policies and procedure where lab enters into contract to provide medical

services

4) To supervise procedure for selecting referral laboratories and maintain referral lab register and

duplicate copy of reports either as soft copy or hard copy

5) To see that all quality and technical records are identified, indexed, maintained and reviewed

6) To supervise overall quality control of microbiology including ILQA and EQAS

Will participate in: CQI meetings, Clinical Audit, MRM meetings, Departmental meetings,

CMNABL Audits, NABH Audits and all activities related to HICC meetings
